Scaling & Polishing in Bangalore

Scaling removes the plaque and hardened tartar that a toothbrush cannot shift, particularly along and just under the gumline. Polishing then smooths the tooth surfaces and lifts surface staining. It is the routine cleaning that keeps gum disease from taking hold.

What it does for you

Prevents gum disease

Tartar sitting along the gumline keeps bacteria in contact with the gum. Removing it is the single most effective way to stop gingivitis progressing into something that threatens the supporting bone.

Removes what brushing cannot

Once plaque hardens into tartar it is bonded to the tooth. No brush, mouthwash or home remedy removes it — it has to be scaled off.

Lifts surface staining

Polishing removes discolouration left by tea, coffee, tobacco and pigmented foods, so teeth look cleaner and closer to their natural shade.

Fresher breath

A large share of persistent bad breath comes from bacteria in plaque and around the gumline. Clearing it addresses the cause rather than covering it.

Helps you keep your teeth

Gum disease, not decay, is the leading reason adults lose teeth. Regular scaling is the main way that is prevented.

Problems get caught early

A cleaning appointment is also an examination. Small cavities, a cracked filling or early gum recession are far easier to deal with when found early.

How the treatment works

1

Examination

Teeth and gums are checked for plaque, tartar, bleeding and any signs of gum disease or decay.

2

Scaling

Hardened deposits are removed from the tooth surfaces and from along and just below the gumline.

3

Polishing

The teeth are polished to smooth the surfaces and remove surface discolouration, which also makes it harder for plaque to re-adhere.

4

Home care and recall

Technique guidance for the areas you are missing, and a review interval set to your own risk rather than a default.

Side effects, honestly

Most patients experience none of these. Some patients, in rare cases, may notice the following — listed because you deserve the full picture before you decide.

Temporary sensitivity

Teeth can feel sensitive to cold for a few days, particularly where tartar had been covering exposed root surfaces. It usually settles on its own.

Tender or bleeding gums

Gums that were already inflamed often bleed during the appointment and feel sore briefly afterwards. This settles as the inflammation resolves.

Gaps can feel more noticeable

Where heavy tartar had been filling spaces between teeth, those spaces can feel larger once it is removed. The tartar was not holding the teeth together, but it is worth knowing to expect.

Tell your dentist first

Mention any heart condition, implanted device, bleeding disorder, medication you take, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, so the appointment can be adjusted appropriately.

Questions patients ask

How often should I have scaling and polishing done?
Every 6 to 12 months suits most people. If you form tartar quickly, smoke, or have a history of gum disease, your dentist may recommend a shorter interval.
Does scaling hurt?
For most people it is uncomfortable rather than painful, mainly where the gums are already inflamed. If you are sensitive, numbing can be used. Tell the clinician during the appointment rather than enduring it.
Does scaling damage or thin my teeth?
No. This is a common worry. Scaling removes deposits from the tooth surface, not enamel. Teeth can feel different afterwards because the tartar that was coating them is gone.
Will scaling whiten my teeth?
It removes surface stains, so teeth often look noticeably cleaner and brighter. It does not change the natural underlying shade of the enamel — that is what whitening does.
My gums bleed when I brush. Should I brush that area less?
No — bleeding is usually a sign of inflammation from plaque, and stopping brushing makes it worse. Get it looked at, and keep cleaning the area gently and thoroughly.
Is scaling safe during pregnancy?
Routine cleaning is generally considered safe and gum inflammation is common in pregnancy. Tell your dentist you are pregnant so the appointment and any imaging can be planned accordingly.
Is a teeth cleaning the same as scaling and polishing?
Yes. When people ask to get their teeth cleaned, or to "clean and polish" their teeth, scaling and polishing is the appointment they mean. Scaling lifts hardened deposits from the tooth surface and just below the gumline; polishing smooths the surface afterwards so deposits are slower to return. Clinics use the clinical name; patients use the plain one.
How are the teeth actually cleaned — is it scraping?
An ultrasonic scaler does most of the work. It uses high-frequency vibration and a water spray to break tartar away from the tooth rather than scraping it off, with hand instruments used only for anything the tip cannot reach. Soft plaque comes away easily; hardened tartar is what needs the instrument. Most people describe it as vibration and cold water.
