Anaesthetic cream is left on for 30 to 45 minutes, then the doctor marks the exact injection points on your face.

The filler gel is placed at the marked points. Depending on the number of areas this takes from about 15 minutes to an hour.

Ice is applied for any swelling, aftercare is explained, and the final result is reviewed once it has settled over the following days.

Most patients experience none of these. Some patients, in rare cases, may notice the following — listed because you deserve the full picture before you decide.

Swelling and redness

Very common in the first hours to days, particularly around the lips and eyes. Ice helps, and it typically settles within one to two days.

Bruising and tenderness

Bruising at the injection site is a normal possibility, more likely if you take blood thinners or fish oil. It generally resolves within a few days.

Lumps or unevenness

Occasionally the product settles unevenly in the first days. Tell your doctor rather than massaging it yourself — hyaluronic acid fillers can be adjusted or dissolved if needed.

Rare but serious complications

Infection, allergic reaction, or blockage of a blood vessel are rare but real risks of any filler. They are the reason this treatment should only be performed by a doctor who can recognise and manage them, in a clinic that stocks the reversal agent.

How soon do dermal fillers show a result?
The effect is close to immediate, though it is worth waiting a day or two for swelling to settle before judging the final result.
What can fillers actually do?
They add volume and smooth deeper creases — restoring cheek fullness, softening nose-to-mouth folds, defining the jawline or chin, and adding fullness to the lips.
How long do they last?
Generally from about six months to two years, depending on the type of filler used, the area treated and your own metabolism. Your doctor will tell you what to expect for your specific plan.
How are fillers different from Botox?
A filler adds volume where something is missing. Botox reduces the muscle movement that creates expression lines. They solve different problems and are often used together.
What is the right age to start?
There is no set age. It depends on what has actually changed in your face rather than on a birthday. A doctor should tell you honestly if a filler is not the right answer for your concern yet.
Are there side effects?
Swelling, redness, bruising and tenderness are common and short-lived. Infection, allergic reaction and vascular complications are rare but serious, which is why the treatment is doctor-only here. Avoid alcohol, smoking, strenuous exercise and fish oil around your appointment.
What if I do not like the result?
Most fillers used are hyaluronic acid based, which means they can be dissolved with an enzyme injection if the result is not what you wanted. Discuss this at consultation.
Are under-eye fillers the same as tear trough fillers, and will they help dark circles?
Tear trough is the anatomical name for the groove under the eye, so tear trough filler and under-eye filler describe the same treatment. It addresses hollowing and the shadow that hollowing casts. Dark circles caused by pigment rather than shadow are a different problem, and under- eye filler is not the treatment for them — that distinction is made at examination.
How is filler measured — by the ml or by the syringe?
Hyaluronic acid fillers come in pre-filled syringes, usually one ml, and cosmetic filler injections are planned in those units. How many you need depends on the area and on how much volume has been lost, so a jawline and a lip are rarely the same number. Your doctor confirms the plan before anything is opened.
