Is laser dentistry painful?

The comfort claim, accurately stated

For soft-tissue procedures a laser suits, it is generally more precise, causes less bleeding and often heals more comfortably than the conventional alternative. That is a real advantage and it is why the technique is used.

What it is not is a blanket promise that dental treatment stops involving anaesthesia.

The injection question, answered honestly

Sometimes an injection is not needed, for minor soft-tissue procedures. But anaesthesia is still used for much laser work. The treatment page states this outright, and it is worth repeating because the opposite is such a common selling line.

Ask about your procedure specifically. "Will I need an injection for this?" is a better question than "does laser dentistry need injections?", because the answer varies by procedure rather than by tool.

Afterwards

The usual effects are minor and short-lived:

• Temporary sensitivity or soreness at the treated site for a few days, typically resolving quickly.
• Some swelling or tenderness of the gums after soft-tissue work, settling as the area heals.

Anything worsening rather than settling should be reported to the clinic rather than waited out.

The safety point that is not about pain

Laser light can damage the eyes, so protective eyewear is worn by the patient and everyone else in the room for the entire procedure. This is mandatory, not a precaution that can be skipped for a quick treatment.

Performed by a trained dentist with the correct settings and that eye protection, it is a well-established technique.

What to ask before booking

Which part of your treatment uses the laser, whether anaesthesia is planned, what the alternative conventional approach would be, and why the laser is the better choice for your case. A dentist should be comfortable answering all four, including where a laser is not the right tool.
