How long do dental implants last?

Reviewed by The Aesthetic Edge medical team

With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, a dental implant is intended as a long-term solution — the titanium post fuses with the jawbone and stays there. The part that wears is the crown on top, which is a separate component and may need replacing sooner than the implant itself. Gum health around the implant is what decides the outcome more than anything else.

Two components, two different lifespans

The question has a cleaner answer once the implant is split into its parts, which is how it is actually built:

  • The titanium post, placed in the jawbone and left to fuse with it. This is the part intended to last long-term.
  • The abutment, connecting the post to the visible tooth.
  • The crown, which is what you see and chew with — and the part most likely to need replacing at some point.

So "how long do implants last" and "how long until something needs doing" are two different questions. The second one usually has the crown as its answer.

What decides the outcome

The implant is anchored in bone and surrounded by gum, and both need to stay healthy for it to stay stable. That makes daily cleaning and regular check-ups the main variables rather than the implant's own construction.

The same conditions that make someone a poor candidate in the first place also shorten the life of an implant already placed — uncontrolled diabetes, active gum disease and heavy smoking all affect how gum and bone behave around it.

Why titanium

Bone bonds readily to titanium. That process, called osseointegration, is what makes the post stable enough to chew on and is the reason the treatment takes several months rather than one appointment. It is also why the post is not really a wear part in the way the crown is.

What maintenance actually looks like

Brushing and cleaning between the teeth as you would for a natural tooth, plus the check-ups where the dentist looks specifically at the gum margin and the bone level around the implant. Problems there are usually silent early and obvious late, which is the entire argument for keeping the appointments.

The honest summary

Nobody can promise a lifespan for an individual implant, and a clinic that gives you a confident number for yours is guessing. What is fair to say is that the post is designed to be permanent, the crown is not, and how long you get depends more on the gum around it than on the implant in it.
