How long does a dental crown last?
Commonly a decade or more with good hygiene and regular check-ups. Lifespan depends on the material, where in the mouth it sits, and whether you grind your teeth. The part usually left out is that crowns rarely fail on their own — what more often ends them is decay or gum trouble at the margin where the crown meets the tooth underneath.
The usual figure
A decade or more is common, with good hygiene and regular check-ups. Plenty last considerably longer.
What changes it
- Material, and what it is being asked to do.
- Where in the mouth it sits. A back tooth takes the full force of chewing.
- Grinding, which shortens the life of any restoration and is worth telling your dentist about even if you are not certain you do it.
The failure that actually happens
A crown covers the tooth; it does not replace it. The tooth underneath is still a tooth, still has a margin where the crown meets it, and can still develop decay or gum disease at that junction.
That margin is the usual reason a crown's life ends — not the ceramic wearing out. Which means the thing that most affects longevity is cleaning right at the gumline, and the check-ups that inspect that margin while a problem is still small.
Bridges need a specific technique
If you have a bridge rather than a single crown, plaque collects beneath the false tooth and cannot be reached by normal flossing. A floss threader, superfloss or an interdental brush is required to clean underneath it.
Without that, the supporting teeth either side are at risk of decay and gum disease — and those are the teeth holding the bridge up. You should be shown the technique at the fitting appointment; it matters more than most people expect.
What is permanent regardless
Preparing a tooth for a crown, and preparing the teeth either side for a bridge, removes tooth structure that does not grow back. Those teeth will always need a restoration afterwards. That is not a criticism of the treatment, but it is the reason it is worth asking whether a crown is necessary now or whether something more conservative would do.
For a missing tooth, it is also the reason to ask about an implant before choosing a bridge — an implant is anchored in the jawbone and leaves the neighbouring teeth untouched.
Getting the most out of it
Clean the margin, use the right tool if it is a bridge, mention grinding, and keep the check-ups. Those four do more for the lifespan than the choice of material.
