Does getting a dental crown hurt?

The appointment itself

Preparation is done under local anaesthesia. The tooth is numb, so what you notice is the dentist working rather than pain. This is the same for a crown on a single tooth and for the teeth either side of a gap being prepared for a bridge.

The two-appointment shape

Usually two visits: one to prepare the tooth and take the impression, and one to fit the finished restoration once the laboratory has made it. In between, you wear a temporary crown — and that gap is where most of the discomfort people describe actually sits.

What the in-between period feels like

The prepared tooth is often sensitive to hot and cold while the temporary is in place. That is expected. It settles after the final crown goes on, and there is usually a brief period of sensitivity after final cementation too.

Worth knowing about the temporary specifically: it is cemented lightly on purpose, so it can be removed cleanly at the next visit. Avoid sticky and hard foods on that side.

If the temporary comes off

Contact the clinic rather than waiting for the next appointment. The prepared tooth is exposed without it, which is uncomfortable, and leaving the space open risks the neighbouring teeth shifting enough to affect how the final crown fits.

This is a quick fix and not something to endure.

When the tooth needs more than a crown

Pain that is throbbing, that wakes you at night, or that lingers after something hot or cold is a different signal from preparation sensitivity. Report it — a tooth that needs root canal treatment is better identified before the final crown is cemented over it than after.

What to ask beforehand

Ask how many appointments are planned, how long you will have the temporary, what to avoid eating while it is in, and what to do if it comes off outside clinic hours. Those four cover almost everything people find out the hard way.
