Are dental implants painful?
Placement is done under local anaesthesia, so the procedure itself should not hurt — most of what people describe is pressure rather than pain. The part that is genuinely uncomfortable comes afterwards: soreness, swelling and sometimes minor bruising around the site for a few days, managed with prescribed medication and post-operative care. Most people are back to normal routine quickly.
What the placement appointment feels like
The implant is placed under local anaesthesia. The area is fully numb, so what you notice is the dentist working rather than pain — pressure, some vibration, and the sense of something being done. People are frequently surprised that the appointment is the easy part.
The part that is actually uncomfortable
Afterwards, once the anaesthetic wears off, expect:
- Soreness around the site, strongest in the first day or two.
- Swelling, and sometimes minor bruising.
- A short period of soft foods, avoiding the surgical side while the site closes.
This is managed with prescribed medication and the post-operative instructions you are given. It is a normal healing response to a small surgical procedure, not a sign anything has gone wrong.
Where the "implants are painful" reputation comes from
Implant treatment is spread across several months, because the implant needs time to fuse with the jawbone before the final tooth goes on. People sometimes hear "several months" and picture months of discomfort. They are not the same thing — the healing you feel is measured in days; the waiting is the bone doing its work quietly.
When discomfort is not normal
Call the clinic if pain increases after the second or third day rather than settling, if swelling worsens instead of improving, if you develop a fever, or if there is discharge or a bad taste from the site. Those are the signs worth acting on rather than waiting out.
What to ask beforehand
Ask what anaesthesia is used, what pain relief you will be sent home with, how long the soft-food period lasts in your case, and whether a bone graft is part of your plan — grafting changes the recovery description, so it is better known in advance.
