How long does wisdom tooth removal take to heal?

Reviewed by The Aesthetic Edge medical team

Most people are back to normal activity within a few days to a week, and a deeply impacted tooth generally takes longer than a straightforward one. The distinction worth holding is that feeling fine and being fully healed are not the same date — the socket continues healing for some weeks after you have stopped noticing it.

The two timelines

  • Feeling normal: a few days to a week for most people.
  • Actually healed: the socket continues closing and filling in for some weeks after that.

Almost nobody is told the second one, and it explains why a site can still feel slightly odd long after the pain has gone. That is expected, not a complication.

Roughly how the first week goes

Day one. Some oozing, controlled by biting on gauze. Cold compresses help. Soft, cool foods, away from the extraction side. No smoking, no vigorous rinsing, no straws.

Days two to three. Swelling peaks, and jaw opening is at its most limited. This is usually the low point, and it is the normal course rather than a sign of trouble.

Days three to seven. Swelling settles, jaw movement returns, and most people are back to their usual routine — often before the week is out.

What makes recovery longer

Difficulty, mostly. A deeply impacted tooth involves more surgical work than one that has erupted straight, and the recovery reflects that. Having several teeth out at once also extends it, which is one reason some patients choose one side at a time so they can keep chewing on the other.

What can interrupt it

Losing the blood clot leaves a dry socket — acutely painful a few days after the extraction, treatable, and made less likely by avoiding smoking, vigorous rinsing and straws in the first days. Socket infection is less common and also treatable.

Both announce themselves the same way: pain that increases after day three instead of easing. Add fever, a bad taste, spreading swelling, difficulty swallowing or bleeding that does not settle to the list of reasons to call rather than wait.

Eating your way through it

Soft and cool for the first day or two, avoiding the extraction side. Skip very hot food and alcohol. Returning to a normal diet happens gradually and is usually led by comfort rather than by a rule.
