When should a child first see a dentist?

Reviewed by The Aesthetic Edge medical team

Around the first birthday, or when the first tooth appears — whichever comes first. That sounds early to most parents, and the reason is that the visit is not about treatment. It is about familiarising the child with the setting and giving parents guidance at the point where habits are still being formed rather than corrected.

The answer, and why it sounds early

Around the first birthday, or when the first tooth appears. Most parents expect the answer to be three or four, and bring a child when something is already wrong.

The early visit is not treatment. It is a gentle look at the mouth, teeth and gums, time for the child to get comfortable in the room, brushing guidance, and answers to your questions. Deliberately low-key.

Why it matters that the first visit is uneventful

A child whose first experience of a dental chair involves pain associates the two permanently. A child who has been three times and had nothing happen has a completely different relationship with it.

That is the real argument for going before there is a problem, and it pays off for years.

Baby teeth are not disposable

The most common reason parents delay is the assumption that baby teeth do not matter because they fall out anyway. They do matter:

  • They hold space for the adult teeth, and losing one early can crowd them.
  • Decay in them causes real pain and infection.
  • It can damage the developing adult tooth underneath.

If your child is already frightened

Go slowly. The approach is to show each instrument, say what will happen before it happens, and allow the child to pause. A short, positive first visit with no treatment at all is often the right starting point — and it is a legitimate thing to book.

What helps at home

Brush twice daily with an age-appropriate fluoride toothpaste, and supervise until your child can do it properly themselves. Floss where teeth touch. Limit sugary snacks and drinks, especially between meals and at bedtime — frequency matters as much as quantity.

Fissure sealants

A thin protective coating applied to the deep grooves of the back teeth, where most childhood decay starts. Quick, painless, and needing no drilling or anaesthesia. Worth asking about at a check-up.
