Are dental X-rays safe for children?

The short answer

Dental X-rays use a low dose and are taken with appropriate protection. For a child having one where there is a reason to, this is a well-established and routine part of dental care.

The reassurance that matters more than the dose

They are not taken at every visit as a matter of course. They are used where there is a clinical reason.

That is the meaningful safeguard, because it means the question is never "is a lifetime of routine X-rays safe" — it is "is this one, now, justified". A dentist should be able to tell you what they are looking for.

The most common reason

Checking between back teeth that are touching. Once the back teeth are in contact, the surfaces between them cannot be seen or probed directly, and decay there is invisible on examination until it is well advanced.

This matters more in children than people assume, because decay in baby teeth causes real pain and infection, can damage the developing adult tooth underneath, and losing a baby tooth early can crowd the adult teeth that follow.

Questions you are entitled to ask

• What are you looking for?
• What would change if we did not take it?
• Can it wait until the next visit?

None of these is an awkward question. A dentist who is taking an X-ray for a reason will have an answer to all three, and asking is a better response to uncertainty than declining without discussing it.

If your child is anxious about it

The same approach that works for the rest of the visit works here: show the equipment, explain what will happen before it happens, and allow a pause. It is quick and nothing touches the tooth.

There is a small dose, and there is a real cost to missing decay between the back teeth of a child. Neither side of that is zero, which is exactly why the decision is made case by case instead of by policy.
