How long do dentures take to get used to?

The usual adjustment period

A few weeks. The first days are the strangest and it improves steadily from there. Most people adapt well.

An upper denture is generally easier to get used to than a lower full denture, which has less surface area to hold onto and sits between a moving tongue and cheek. If you have a lower one and it feels harder than you expected, that is the normal experience rather than a sign it was badly made.

What feels odd at first

• A full or bulky feeling, and often more saliva than usual. A new denture is a foreign object and the mouth responds to it. This generally settles within days.
• Speech. Certain sounds can be awkward for the first week or two. Reading aloud is the practical fix and it works faster than waiting.
• Eating, which is the part most people find takes longest.

Sore spots are expected — and are fixed, not tolerated

Almost everyone gets a few pressure points in the first weeks. They are adjusted quickly at a follow-up appointment.

Two things matter here, and both come straight from the clinic's guidance: do not leave a rubbing denture in place, and do not file it yourself. An adjustment takes minutes in the chair; a self-adjusted denture usually ends up needing remaking.

Habits that make it faster

Start with soft food cut small, chew on both sides evenly, and reintroduce harder foods gradually. Read aloud for the speech. Clean the denture daily with a denture brush and mild soap or a denture cleaner — not ordinary toothpaste, which is too abrasive — and take it out at night, keeping it in water or a cleaning solution so it does not dry out and distort.

Overnight removal is not optional. Dentures left in overnight or cleaned poorly can cause fungal infection of the palate and irritate the gums beneath.

Later on, the fit will change

The jawbone slowly resorbs where teeth are missing, so a denture that fitted well will loosen over the years and need relining or remaking. That is normal rather than a sign something went wrong — and if a lower denture is the struggle, implant-retained dentures clip onto a small number of implants and greatly improve stability.
