Can you whiten crowns and fillings?
No. Whitening only affects natural enamel, so crowns, veneers and tooth-coloured fillings keep exactly the shade they were made in. If any of them sit in your smile line they can end up looking darker than the teeth around them once those lighten. The usual answer is sequencing — whiten first, then replace the restorations to match the new shade.
The short answer, and the reason
Whitening gel works on natural enamel. Ceramic and composite are not enamel, have no stain to lift out, and do not respond to it at all. A crown placed five years ago will be the same shade after your appointment as before it.
Why that matters more than it sounds
If your restorations are at the back, nobody will ever notice. The problem is restorations in the smile line. Those were originally shade-matched to your natural teeth as they were at the time. Lighten the natural teeth around them and the match breaks — the restoration now reads as the dark one, and it can be more noticeable than the dullness you set out to fix.
The sequencing that solves it
The order is what matters:
- Assessment, where the dentist identifies which visible teeth are natural and which are restored.
- Whiten the natural teeth to the shade you want and let it settle.
- Replace the visible restorations to match the new shade, if you decide to.
Doing it the other way round — new crowns first, whitening second — leaves you with restorations matched to a shade you are about to change.
When whitening is not the right treatment at all
If a large part of your smile line is already restored, bleaching is working on a minority of what is on show. At that point the honest conversation is about a smile makeover rather than whitening, because the result you want is a restorative one. A dentist should say so at assessment.
Some natural discolouration also responds poorly — staining from tetracycline, fluorosis, trauma or a dead nerve bleaches unevenly or not at all, and that is also something to be told beforehand rather than after.
What to ask at your appointment
Ask which of your visible teeth are restorations, what shade they are now, and what replacing them would involve if you go ahead. Those three answers tell you whether whitening alone gets you the result you are picturing.
