What is a smile makeover?

It is a plan, not a procedure

You do not book "a smile makeover" the way you book a filling. It is a combination of treatments selected around what you actually want changed, and the combination is different for everyone.

Depending on the case it may involve whitening, veneers, crowns, bonding, gum contouring, orthodontic alignment or implants — usually several of these. The specific list comes out of the assessment.

The distinction that matters most

Some steps are additive and reversible. Some are not.

• Reversible: whitening and bonding.
• Not reversible: veneers and crowns, because enamel is removed to make space for them. Those teeth will always need a restoration afterwards.

Your dentist should be explicit about which category each step falls into, before you agree to it. If that distinction has not been drawn for you, ask for it directly — it is the single most consequential thing in the plan.

See it before you commit

A trial smile or digital mock-up is a normal part of planning, and you should ask for one. It is the point at which to say the teeth look too long, too white or the wrong shape — which is a much easier conversation before the work than after it.

Wanting a change at that stage is expected, not difficult.

The sequencing question

Order matters. Whitening comes before matching any restorations to a shade, because ceramic and composite do not bleach — whiten first, then match. Getting that backwards leaves you with new restorations matched to a shade you are about to change.

You do not have to do it all at once

A plan can be staged over time, and the order matters more than the pace. Discuss phasing at the planning appointment so the sequence still works when it is spread out.

How long it lasts

Well-made restorations commonly last many years, but they are not permanent. Lifespan depends on hygiene, diet, whether you grind your teeth, and keeping up with review appointments.
