How long does teeth whitening last?

The honest range, and why it is a range

Several months to a few years. Two people treated on the same day with the same gel can be at opposite ends of that, and the reason is what happens afterwards rather than anything about the appointment.

The shade you leave with is the starting point. From there it drifts back toward wherever your habits pull it.

What shortens it most

• Filter coffee and chai, in the quantities they are drunk here, are the single biggest factor for most patients.
• Tobacco, which stains faster than anything else on this list.
• Red wine, dark colas and heavily coloured foods.
• Oral hygiene. Surface stain accumulates on plaque; the cleaner the tooth surface stays, the slower the drift.

None of this means avoiding those things. It means the timeline is yours to influence, which is more useful to know than an average.

The first couple of days matter more than the rest

Enamel is more receptive to staining immediately after treatment, which is why staining foods are worth avoiding for a couple of days afterwards. There is no downtime otherwise — you can go back to work straight away.

Keeping the result

Regular scaling and polishing removes the surface stain that would otherwise make the result look older than it is, and it is the appointment that precedes whitening in the first place. Whether a top-up whitening session is worth it, and when, is a conversation with your dentist rather than a fixed schedule.

What does not fade

If part of your smile line is a crown, veneer or tooth-coloured filling, it never lightened in the first place and it will not fade either — which can make the contrast more noticeable over time as the natural teeth drift back. That is covered separately.
