Making BB Glow Treatment Results Last: The Maintenance Nobody Explains

By The Aesthetic Edge Editorial TeamReviewed by The Aesthetic Edge medical team
A BB Glow session in progress at The Aesthetic Edge, Bangalore

A completed BB Glow course holds its effect for roughly four to six weeks, and the clinic's protocol is a top-up every four to five months to keep tone reading evenly. What happens between those appointments matters as much as the appointments themselves: daily sunscreen, no retinol or acids for the length of a course, and gentle cleansing. Your own interval is confirmed by your doctor at review.

That is the short answer. The longer one is worth reading, because maintenance is the part of BB Glow most people are never properly walked through — they are told about the course, and then left to work out the upkeep on their own.

How long does the result last before it needs topping up?

Two numbers, and they answer two different questions. Our treatment core documents that results from a completed course last around four to six weeks, and that maintenance runs every four to five months.

Those figures are not in conflict so much as describing different things — one is how long the effect of a finished course is documented to hold, the other is the interval the clinic schedules top-ups at. Where your own skin sits between them is a question for your review appointment, not for a web page. The core is explicit that results vary with skin type, sun exposure and how consistent your aftercare is, so a single number that fits everybody does not exist and cannot be promised.

What you can reasonably plan around: a course of four to six sessions roughly a fortnight apart, and then a return visit some months later rather than a permanent change. Anyone describing BB Glow as one-and-done has skipped the part of the conversation that matters.

Why is maintenance a top-up rather than repeating the whole course?

Because the first course and the maintenance visit are doing different amounts of work. The initial run of four to six sessions builds the result gradually, which is the point — our core describes BB Glow as suited to patients who want something gradual and subtle rather than a dramatic change. Maintenance is holding a result that already exists.

Your doctor confirms what your top-up looks like at consultation and again at each visit, because the number of sessions in a course is itself decided that way — based on your skin type and how much unevenness is being treated. Nobody can sensibly quote your maintenance plan before seeing your skin.

What does home care actually have to do with it?

More than most patients expect, and this is the single most useful thing on this page. The clinic's own core lists sun exposure and aftercare consistency alongside skin type as the three things results vary with. Two of those three are in your hands every day.

Daily sunscreen is the non-negotiable one. Treated skin is more reactive to UV, and our core does not hedge on this: sunscreen is not optional. In Bangalore that means every day, not only on bright days and not only in April.

The rest is unglamorous. Gentle cleansing rather than scrubbing. Not picking at skin that feels tight in the first few days. Keeping to the aftercare sheet you are handed at the end of the session rather than a routine you found online.

Which products do I have to stop, and for how long?

Retinol, AHAs and BHAs come out of your routine for the length of your course. That is the clinic's instruction, not a general precaution, and it applies across the whole run of sessions rather than for a day or two after each one.

For the first 24 hours after any session there is a stricter window: no makeup, and no washing or scrubbing the face at all. After that you go back to your usual routine minus the actives above.

Sunlight, steam rooms and saunas should be avoided for two weeks. If you have a steam-and-sauna habit at the gym, plan the course around it rather than the other way round.

If you already use a prescribed topical for something else, say so at consultation rather than stopping it yourself. Deciding what stays and what pauses is a medical judgement about your skin, and it is one of the reasons the assessment happens before any serum is chosen.

Does anything else affect how long it holds?

Sun exposure is the one our core names directly, and it is the one you can do something about. Beyond that, the honest answer is that skin type plays a part you cannot change and the treatment core says so plainly.

It is worth being clear about what BB Glow is doing, because it explains why upkeep is needed at all. The tinted serum sits in the upper layers of the skin. As the skin renews itself, the effect fades — gradually, not abruptly. It does not bleach or lighten your natural skin colour, and it is not a permanent change to your tone. It is a cosmetic evening-out of how tone reads, which is exactly why it is scheduled rather than finished.

What happens at a maintenance visit?

The same shape as a session in the original course. About an hour, including cleansing and skin preparation. The face is cleansed, an exfoliating gel goes on for a few minutes and comes off, the tinted serum is worked into the upper layers with a micro-needling pen at a controlled depth, and a calming mask finishes the session. You leave with written aftercare.

The part patients forget is the review that comes first. Skin type, active breakouts and the cause of your pigmentation are reassessed by a doctor at each visit rather than assumed to be unchanged since your first appointment. If something has changed — a new medication, a pregnancy, an active infection or open wound in the area — the plan changes with it. BB Glow is not offered during pregnancy or breastfeeding, over active infections, open wounds or skin cancer, or where there is a known allergy to any ingredient in the serum.

What if I would rather treat the cause than keep topping up?

That is a legitimate conversation to have, and it is a different treatment conversation. BB Glow softens how uneven tone reads; it is not the only route and it is not always the right first one.

A chemical peel works differently — a controlled solution lifts away dead surface cells so fresher skin comes through, with the depth and the solution chosen by a doctor for your skin type. If your concern is texture and old marks rather than the daily foundation habit, that is worth raising. Peels and BB Glow also interact with each other's rules, since a course of BB Glow already asks you to keep acids out of your routine, so the two are sequenced by your doctor rather than booked in parallel on your own initiative.

If you are already thinking in terms of semi-permanent colour and its upkeep, lip micropigmentation follows a similar logic in a different place — doctor-assessed, matched to your own undertones, and planned with its own review rhythm rather than done once and forgotten.

When should I ring the clinic rather than wait for my next visit?

Some early tightness, redness and mild irritation is common in the first few days and usually settles within three to four days. That is the expected pattern.

The signal our core asks you to act on is direction rather than presence: tell your doctor if redness is worsening rather than fading. Do not sit at home comparing your face to photographs on the internet and trying to decide what it means — that is not something to self-assess, and the clinic would far rather take a call that turns out to be nothing.

Ring the clinic if redness is getting worse rather than better, if irritation is still building past the first few days instead of settling, or if anything about the treated skin worries you at any point. The same applies between maintenance visits. If you are ever unsure whether something warrants a call, make the call.

Booking your maintenance sensibly

Put the top-up in the diary at your last session rather than waiting for the result to fade and then finding an appointment. Working backwards from an event is fine — leave room, since some redness in the first few days is normal — but do not compress a course to fit a date. The interval between sessions is part of the protocol.

If you have not started yet, the consultation is where the plan is actually made: ₹500, waived off against treatment, and it is a doctor who assesses your skin type, your breakouts and the cause of your pigmentation before any serum is chosen. Book an appointment and bring your current routine with you — the products you are using are part of the conversation, not an afterthought.
