What the appointment feels like

Numbing cream is applied and left for 30 to 45 minutes before anything happens. That wait is most of the appointment, and it is what makes the rest tolerable.

With the scalp numbed, most patients describe the injections as pressure rather than pain — a sense of the needle and of fluid going in, without the sharpness people brace for.

The day after

Some tenderness or a heavy feeling in the scalp for a day or two is normal. People describe it as similar to having worn a tight ponytail. It settles on its own.

No downtime, but a short list of restrictions

Most patients return to work the same day. For roughly the next two days:

• No hair washing for about 48 hours.
• Avoid exercise, swimming, steam and direct sun for two days.

These are short and specific, and they exist to leave the scalp undisturbed while it settles.

What makes it more uncomfortable for some people

Density of injections over an area, and scalp sensitivity, both vary. If you found a previous session harder than expected, say so — the numbing time can be extended, which is a simple adjustment.

Who should not have it

It is not carried out during pregnancy or breastfeeding, while you are on antibiotics or blood-thinning medication, or where there is an active scalp infection or a platelet disorder. Disclose all medication at consultation — and do not stop anything prescribed on your own.

Worth knowing before you weigh the discomfort

PRP acts on follicles that are still present and active. Areas fully bare for a long period are unlikely to respond, and a doctor should tell you that at consultation rather than selling you a course that cannot work. That is a more important question than whether the injections sting.
