How long does PRP hair treatment take to work?

Reviewed by The Aesthetic Edge medical team

Reduced shedding is usually noticed first, within the first few weeks. Visible density takes considerably longer, because hair grows roughly a centimetre a month regardless of what the follicle is treated with. That is why review photographs are taken at the three-month mark. Results are not guaranteed and vary with the cause and stage of your hair loss.

Two different timelines

Reduced shedding comes first — usually within the first few weeks. It is the change patients notice earliest, often in the drain or on the pillow rather than in the mirror.

Visible density takes months. These are not the same milestone and conflating them is why people abandon treatment too early.

The arithmetic that sets the floor

Hair grows roughly a centimetre a month. Whatever a treatment does to a follicle, the hair it produces still has to grow at that rate to become visible.

That single fact rules out any promise of visible regrowth in 30 days, from any clinic and any treatment. If you are being shown a dramatic one-month before-and-after, the arithmetic does not support it.

Why three months

Comparison photographs are taken at the three-month mark because that is the first point where density change can honestly be assessed. Before then there is not enough new growth to see, and impressions in a bathroom mirror under different lighting are not evidence either way.

The review is against your own baseline photographs, which is the only fair comparison.

What the timeline depends on

The cause and stage of your hair loss. PRP acts on follicles still present and active, so a scalp with a lot of active follicle responds differently from one where thinning is long-established. Areas fully bare for a long period are unlikely to respond at all.

Results are not guaranteed. That is the treatment page's own wording and it is the honest position.

Being patient in a useful way

Three practical things: take the baseline photographs seriously, since the whole assessment rests on them; keep the monthly rhythm rather than stretching sessions out; and mention any deficiency testing — iron, vitamin D, B12 and thyroid abnormalities are common contributors, and treating the scalp while leaving a deficiency uncorrected limits how far any therapy can go.
