How long does hair fall treatment take to work?
Reduced shedding is usually the first thing patients notice, often within six to eight weeks. Visible density takes considerably longer because hair grows roughly a centimetre a month, so meaningful comparison photographs are taken at three months and beyond. Those two milestones are frequently confused, and the confusion is why people stop treatment before it has had a chance.
Two milestones, months apart
Reduced shedding: often within six to eight weeks. Noticed on the pillow, in the shower drain and on the brush.
Visible density: months later. This is what people mean when they ask whether it is working, and it is not the thing that moves first.
Why density is slow, unavoidably
Hair grows roughly a centimetre a month. However well a follicle responds, the hair it produces has to grow at that rate before anyone can see it.
That arithmetic sets a floor that no treatment gets under, which is why comparison photographs are taken at three months and beyond rather than at four weeks. It is also why a clinic advertising visible regrowth in 30 days is promising something the growth rate does not allow.
One thing worth asking your doctor about
Some hair therapies are associated with a brief increase in shedding early on before improvement, which is alarming if you are not expecting it. This is not stated on our treatment page, so ask specifically whether it applies to the therapy you are put on — it is much easier to sit through when you have been warned.
Judge it against a photograph, not a memory
Baseline photographs are taken for a reason. Day-to-day impressions in different lighting are unreliable in both directions — people miss real improvement and imagine decline. The three-month review is against your own baseline, which is the only fair comparison available.
What limits the ceiling
Two things:
- Deficiencies left uncorrected. Iron, vitamin D, B12 and thyroid abnormalities are common contributors, and treating the scalp while one is uncorrected limits how far any therapy can go.
- How much active follicle remains. Areas completely bare for years respond poorly. Thinning-but-active does better.
And the honest caveat
No treatment can promise regrowth. What you should expect is a plan reviewed at three months against evidence, and a doctor willing to say when it is not working.
