Is a lash lift safe for your natural lashes?

The conditional answer

Done correctly, at the right timing for your lash thickness, it should not damage them.

Both conditions are doing work, and the second is the one people never hear about.

Processing time is a judgement about your lashes

The lifting solution needs a certain time on the lash, and that time depends on how thick and how strong your lashes are. It is not a fixed number printed on a bottle.

That is why the same product is safe in one pair of hands and damaging in another — and why "is a lash lift safe" is really the question who is doing it, and how do they decide the timing?

Ask that at booking. It is a reasonable question and the answer is informative.

Over-processing is the specific risk

Two ways it happens:

• Solution left on too long.
• Repeating the treatment before lashes have recovered.

Our treatment page states the policy that follows from this: sessions are spaced rather than re-lifted on request. If a provider will lift you again whenever you ask, that is not flexibility.

The other recognised effects

• Irritation or reaction to the solution — redness, stinging or watering.
• Over-processed lashes.
• An underwhelming lift on very short lashes. That last one is an expectations issue rather than a safety one, and it is worth raising at consultation if your lashes are short — better to hear it before booking.
• Reasons to postpone, established at assessment.

Nothing touches the eye

Your eyes stay closed throughout and nothing touches the eye itself. Some people find the solutions have a faint smell, which passes.

Contact lenses are removed before the session and go back in afterwards — mention them at consultation so the timing is planned.

The patch test

A patch test should come first before a first lash lift, which is why you should not book one for the day before an important event. Ask how far ahead the patch test needs to be when you make the appointment.

Compared with extensions

A lash lift adds nothing — it reshapes the lashes you have, with no adhesive at the lash line and nothing to fall off unevenly. Extensions glue additional fibres onto each lash and need infills every few weeks.
