How many sessions does it take to remove a tattoo?

Reviewed by The Aesthetic Edge medical team

Typically six to ten sessions, depending on the tattoo's size, colour and how deep the ink was placed. Colour is the variable people underestimate — black and dark inks respond fastest, while green and blue usually need more sessions. Your doctor gives an estimate after seeing it and revises that estimate as your skin responds.

The usual range

Six to ten sessions for most tattoos.

Your doctor gives an estimate at consultation after seeing it, and — importantly — reviews that estimate as your skin responds. It is a projection, not a package.

What decides where you land

  • Size.
  • Colour. Black and dark inks respond fastest. Green and blue usually need more sessions.
  • How deep the ink was placed, which varies with the artist and with whether it was professional or amateur work.

You should be told which parts of your tattoo are likely to be stubborn before you begin, rather than discovering it at session six.

Ask about the calendar, not just the count

Sessions are spaced to let the skin recover and let the body clear the fragmented ink. Our treatment page gives the session count but not the interval, so ask for it — because six sessions spaced widely is a long project, and the count alone can make it sound like a few months when it may not be.

If you have a date in mind, this is the number that tells you whether it is achievable.

Complete removal is not guaranteed

Often a tattoo fades to the point of being unnoticeable. Complete clearance is not guaranteed for every tattoo — deep or multi-coloured ink can leave a faint shadow.

This should be discussed honestly at consultation. If you are being promised a blank slate on a large multi-coloured piece, that promise is going beyond what our own treatment page will claim.

Cost, asked the right way

We do not publish a tattoo removal price. Over a six-to-ten session course, the per-session figure is much less informative than the total, so ask for:

  • The per-session price.
  • The estimated total for your tattoo.
  • What happens if it needs more sessions than estimated.

That third question is the one that separates clinics.
