Does tattoo removal hurt?
Some discomfort is expected. Most patients describe it as similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin. Cooling is used throughout the session, and numbing can be discussed for larger or more sensitive areas. Downtime is minimal — most people resume normal activities immediately, keeping the area clean, dry and out of the sun while it heals.
What it feels like
Some discomfort is expected — this is not a comfortable treatment and it is better to know that in advance.
The description almost everyone uses, and the one our treatment page gives, is a rubber band snapping against the skin, repeated. Short, sharp, and over quickly per pulse.
What makes it manageable
- Cooling is used throughout the session.
- Numbing can be discussed for larger or more sensitive areas. If you are treating a big piece, or somewhere thin-skinned, raise it at consultation rather than on the day.
Sessions are also usually short relative to other treatments — the discomfort is intense but not prolonged.
Afterwards
Downtime is minimal. Most people resume normal activities immediately.
Recognised effects in the treated area:
- Redness and swelling.
- Blistering, which is a normal part of the process rather than a complication — but it is the thing patients are most surprised by if nobody mentioned it.
The aftercare that protects the outcome
The area needs to be kept clean, dry and out of the sun while it heals over the following weeks.
Do not pick at or pop a blister if one forms. Disturbing healing skin is the route to a mark that outlasts the tattoo, and scarring risk is on the treatment page's own list of recognised effects. Ask the clinic for their specific aftercare instructions and follow those.
Sun is the instruction people ignore
Keeping a treated area out of the sun between sessions matters for the skin's recovery and for how evenly it responds. Over a course of six to ten sessions that is a sustained commitment, not a weekend one — worth factoring in if you are starting before a beach holiday.
Managing it across a course
Because this is a course rather than a single appointment, tell the clinic how each session felt. Cooling, numbing and pacing can be adjusted, and there is no benefit to enduring a level of discomfort quietly across ten visits.
