How long does semi-permanent makeup last?

Reviewed by The Aesthetic Edge medical team

It is **semi-permanent by design**, so it softens gradually rather than staying fixed and then stopping. How long depends on the area, your skin type, sun exposure and your skincare — **oily skin and acid-based products both fade it faster.** Most people refresh it periodically rather than treating it as a one-time procedure.

It softens rather than expires

Semi-permanent makeup is designed to fade gradually. There is no date on which it stops — the pigment simply becomes softer over time until you decide to refresh it.

That is different from a treatment wearing off, and it means "how long does it last" is really "how long until I want it topped up".

What makes it fade faster

  • The area treated.
  • Your skin typeoily skin fades pigment faster.
  • Sun exposure.
  • Your skincareacid-based products fade it faster, which catches out people using exfoliating acids near a treated area without thinking about it.

If you use acids, mention it at consultation. It changes the realistic interval.

The treatment is two appointments, not one

One primary session and a touch-up at around six weeks. Our treatment page is explicit that the touch-up is part of the treatment, not an upsell — pigment does not heal perfectly evenly on anyone.

This matters when comparing prices between clinics. A quote that excludes the six-week touch-up is not the same product as one that includes it, and asking which you are being quoted is the single most useful comparison question.

Do not judge it in the first week

The colour looks considerably stronger in the first days than it will once healed, and the pigment darkens and then flakes as part of normal healing.

Wait for it to heal before judging it. At the six-week review the shape and colour can be adjusted — and because it is semi-permanent, it also continues softening over time.

Recognised effects

Swelling, redness and tenderness; darkening then flaking; uneven healing; cold sore reactivation; and allergic reaction or infection. Tell your provider if you get cold sores — that is a specific, preventable problem worth raising in advance.

If brows or lips are what you want

The clinic offers microblading for brows and lip micropigmentation as dedicated treatments, each with its own protocol and its own pricing.
