How to Prepare for Botox (and What to Avoid Beforehand)

Preparing for a wrinkle-relaxing injection is mostly about information rather than abstinence. Your doctor needs a full medical history, a complete list of medication including blood thinners, and an honest account of what you want your face to look like. The scheduling matters too: changes begin around four to seven days and settle by two weeks, so the appointment has to sit well ahead of any event.

The rest of this is the detail behind those four points.

What is actually being decided before a needle appears?

Two things, and neither can be settled in advance by you.

The first is whether the lines bothering you are the kind this treatment addresses. At the assessment the doctor examines your face at rest and in movement and separates dynamic lines from static ones — only the dynamic group responds well to a wrinkle-relaxing injectable. The second is the map: which points, and how much at each, planned for your muscle pattern and for how much softening you have asked for, and marked on the skin before anything goes in.

That is why the useful preparation is having a clear answer to "what do you want to change, and what are you afraid of looking like". Vague briefs produce cautious plans.

What about medication — and what must you not do on your own?

Bring the full list, including things you would not think of as medicine: supplements, fish oil, anything from a pharmacy counter.

The reason is specific rather than general. Bruising after this treatment is occasional, and it is more likely if you take blood-thinning medication or fish oil. Knowing that in advance changes what your doctor expects and what you are warned to expect.

What you must not do is stop a prescribed medicine because you read something online. Blood thinners in particular are prescribed for reasons that outrank a bruise. If you think something on your list is relevant, raise it with the doctor who prescribed it and with us — the decision belongs to the two of them, not to a blog and not to you alone.

What else has to be disclosed, even if it feels beside the point?

Say if you are pregnant, might be, or are breastfeeding: the treatment is not advised then. Say if you have any neuromuscular condition, because certain ones rule it out. Mention any active infection or breakout at the area being injected, which is a reason to postpone rather than press on. And mention previous injectable treatments anywhere on your face, including who did them and roughly when.

This is not paperwork. Botulinum toxin has a long clinical record and the products used here are approved, but safety depends heavily on who is injecting and on what they know before they do it. Your history is reviewed first for exactly that reason.

Is there any skincare or routine to pause?

Our own protocol for this treatment does not publish a list of products to stop or a fixed alcohol rule the way some other treatments here do. Rather than inventing one, ask at your consultation and follow what you are told for your plan — particularly if you are already using anything active on the area, or if another treatment sits close to the date.

If you have something else booked at this clinic or elsewhere in the same few weeks, say so. Sequencing two treatments is a conversation your doctor can only have with the full picture.

How far ahead of an event should this sit?

Further than most people assume, because the timeline is slow at the front and has a checkpoint in the middle.

Nothing much happens for the first few days. Changes usually begin at around four to seven days and settle by two weeks. Then there is a review at two weeks, which exists so that a point that has settled unevenly can be adjusted rather than left. If your wedding, shoot or family function is the thing prompting all this, the appointment needs to be comfortably clear of two weeks beforehand — and if you want the option of an adjustment at review, further still.

Working backwards from the date is the single most useful thing you can do before you ring us.

What does the day itself look like?

Short. The appointment runs about 15 to 30 minutes. The doctor watches your face move, plans and marks the points, and places the toxin with a fine needle. Most patients describe a brief sting at each point rather than pain.

Downtime is minimal and most people go back to work the same day. Tiny raised bumps and mild redness at the injection points are common and usually settle within an hour or two — which is worth knowing if you have booked a lunch meeting straight afterwards. If a bruise does appear it generally clears within a few days and can be covered with makeup after the first 24 hours, so it is sensible not to schedule a photographed occasion for the following morning.

Should you ask for numbing?

You can. The needles used are very fine and most patients find the sting brief enough not to need anything, but a numbing cream can be applied beforehand if you would prefer one. Say so when you book rather than on the day, since it needs time to work and will lengthen your appointment.

What should you book before you leave?

The two-week review. It is not optional in spirit even though nothing physically stops you skipping it: it is the appointment where the settled result is assessed and a small adjustment is made if a point needs it, rather than being guessed at on the day of treatment.

It is also worth being clear at the outset about what you are treating. If your real complaint is pores looking large or skin turning shiny within a couple of hours, that is texture and oil rather than movement, and Skin Botox is the treatment aimed at it. If it is jaw clenching, tension headaches or excessive underarm sweating, a wrinkle relaxer plan covers those recognised medical uses. Both are better raised before a plan is drawn than after.

What would make us reschedule you?

An active infection or breakout at the injection site. A pregnancy you have just found out about. A new diagnosis or a new medicine since you booked. A cold sore or any skin that is broken where the needle would go. None of these are wasted appointments — tell us when you ring, and we will move it.

After treatment, contact the clinic rather than waiting if redness or swelling at a point is increasing after the first day, if a bruise keeps spreading instead of fading, or if heaviness or noticeable asymmetry appears or persists beyond the first fortnight. Do not try to interpret it yourself. If anything changes in how you swallow or breathe in the days afterwards, treat that as urgent and go to the nearest emergency department if you cannot reach us.

Booking it

Botox is priced from ₹299 per unit — a per-unit rate rather than a treatment price, so it only becomes a real figure once your points are mapped. The effect typically lasts three to six months. A consultation is ₹500, waived against treatment.
