How a Chemical Peel Actually Works, Layer by Layer

A chemical peel works by applying a controlled solution that weakens the attachments between spent cells at the top of your skin, so that layer detaches over the following days and the fresher tissue underneath is exposed. At greater depths the same controlled injury prompts the skin to repair itself with new collagen. Depth decides which of those two effects you get.

Almost every question people have about peels — why a patch test, why a course, why depth is not a strength setting you can request — has its answer somewhere in that two-sentence mechanism. It is worth unpacking properly.

What does the solution actually do while it is sitting on my face?

It breaks down what holds the outermost cells to each other. Skin sheds continuously anyway; what a chemical peel does is deliberately accelerate a process that has slowed down or become uneven.

The solution stays on for roughly three to five minutes, varying by peel, and is then neutralised. That short window is not a shortcut — it is the mechanism working at a rate that can be watched and stopped. The point of neutralising is that the reaction has a defined end, chosen by the person holding the timer rather than by the acid.

Which agent is doing that work varies by concern. Salicylic suits oily, congested, acne-prone skin because it clears the pore lining rather than just the flat surface. Glycolic and lactic are used for dullness and uneven tone. Mandelic is gentler on deeper skin tones. TCA works at greater depth and asks for more downtime in exchange.

Why does the new skin look different from the skin that left?

Because what leaves is disproportionately the part carrying the problem. Old surface cells hold pigment. When they detach, the discolouration they were carrying goes with them.

That is the whole basis for what peels do about post-acne marks and shallow patchiness. Each treatment lifts pigmented surface cells and speeds up turnover underneath, so the marks read lighter over a course rather than switching off at any single appointment.

It also explains the texture change, which is usually the first thing people notice and often after just one superficial peel. A face with a thick, accumulated dead layer scatters light unevenly and feels rough under a hand. Remove that and the same face reflects light more evenly — nothing has been added, something has been taken away.

How does this reach a mark that a cream could not?

By operating on a different premise. A topical product asks the skin to change its behaviour over weeks. A peel removes the tissue holding the discolouration and lets what replaces it start cleaner.

There is an important boundary here, and it is the single most useful thing to understand before booking. Flat brown or red marks left behind after a breakout are pigment, and they sit in territory a peel reaches. True acne scars are texture — the architecture of the skin has changed — and lifting a surface layer does not rebuild architecture.

Where does collagen come into a peel, then?

Only at medium depth and deeper, and only as a repair response. A medium peel reaches far enough that the skin treats the treatment as something to heal from, and healing skin makes new collagen. That is what softens the appearance of fine lines and shallow age spots across several sessions.

Notice the shape of that sentence: several sessions, and a look that softens. Collagen remodelling is slow biology. A superficial peel is not doing this at all, which is worth knowing if fine lines are the reason you are considering one.

Why is depth a different mechanism rather than just a stronger version?

Because at each depth the skin is being asked to do a different thing. Superficially, it is being asked to shed. Deeper, it is being asked to repair. Those are not the same instruction delivered at two volumes.

Practically, this means you cannot get a medium peel's result by doing more superficial peels, and you cannot get a superficial peel's easy recovery from a deeper one. Deep peels need fewer sessions precisely because each one asks more of the skin, and they flake longer for the same reason.

Can the same mechanism that clears pigment also create it?

Yes, and this is the honest heart of why peels are a medical decision. Skin responds to injury by producing pigment. A peel is a controlled injury. Judge the depth wrongly for the skin type in front of you and the response overshoots — you get pigmentation where you were trying to clear it.

Melanin-rich skin is more prone to that overshoot, which is exactly why the assessment and patch test come first rather than being offered as an optional extra. The patch test is a small-scale run of the mechanism to see how your skin answers before the same question is put to your whole face.

It is also why sun protection after a peel is not general advice. Fresh skin straight out of a turnover cycle is more reactive to UV, and unprotected exposure in that window is the most reliable way to convert a good result into a patchy one. The treated area can temporarily look lighter or darker while it settles, and daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is the main thing determining whether that evens out cleanly.

Why does the mechanism need repeating?

Because each peel acts on the layer available on the day. Turnover is a cycle, not a switch, and pigment that sits slightly deeper than the layer removed this time comes into range next time.

Superficial peels are therefore usually repeated across a few months, on a schedule your doctor sets after seeing how your skin responded to the first one. Medium and deep peels need fewer rounds because each reaches further. Neither route is faster overall — one front-loads the recovery, the other spreads it.

What does this mean for choosing one?
