Stained, Yellow or Dull Teeth
Whitening works on stains, not on every kind of discolouration. Teeth have a natural underlying shade, and a tooth darkened from the inside after trauma or root canal will not respond to the same treatment as surface staining.
What people usually notice
- Yellowing that has crept in gradually
- Distinct brown lines between teeth or at the gum line
- One tooth noticeably darker than its neighbours
- Teeth that look dull in photographs but feel clean
What commonly contributes
- Coffee, tea, red wine and dark foods
- Tobacco in any form
- Plaque and calculus build-up, which is removable
- Natural tooth shade and enamel thickness, which are not stains at all
This page describes what is common, not what is true of you. Only an examination can say which of these applies.
What a doctor may consider
Which of these suits you — and whether any of them is needed at all — is decided at the consultation, not from this page.
What the consultation settles
A cleaning is usually the honest first step, and for some people it is the only step needed. Whitening over existing build-up gives a patchy result.
