Is dandruff causing my hair fall?
Persistent scalp inflammation and heavy scratching can contribute to shedding, and an inflamed scalp limits what regrowth treatments can achieve. But hair fall usually has its own separate cause, which a doctor assesses rather than assumes. Treating the dandruff is worth doing on its own merits — expecting it to resolve the shedding by itself often is not.
The honest answer is "partly, sometimes"
Two things are true at once, and most pages pick only one of them.
Yes, it can contribute. Persistent scalp inflammation and heavy scratching can add to shedding, and an inflamed scalp limits what regrowth treatments are able to do.
But hair fall usually has its own separate cause. Treating the dandruff and expecting the shedding to stop is, more often than not, treating the wrong thing — or only part of the right thing.
Why this matters practically
If you assume dandruff is the explanation, you stop looking. Meanwhile the common contributors to hair fall go unexamined — iron, vitamin D, vitamin B12 and thyroid abnormalities are all frequent and treatable, and none of them is visible on a scalp.
An assessment that looks at both is the point. A doctor assesses the cause of hair fall rather than assuming it, and having a flaky scalp does not exempt you from that.
How to tell whether your shedding is worth assessing separately
Rather than counting hairs — 50 to 100 a day is usual and nobody counts accurately — look for:
- A widening parting.
- A thinner ponytail.
- Unusually heavy shedding for more than a few weeks.
Any of those deserves its own assessment regardless of what your scalp looks like.
The sequencing that makes sense
Settle the scalp, then treat the hair loss — or do both, knowingly. An inflamed scalp limits what a regrowth treatment can achieve, so starting an expensive course on top of an active flare risks under-delivering for a reason that had nothing to do with the course.
Worth raising directly at consultation: should we settle my scalp first?
Treat the dandruff anyway
Separately from the hair fall question, it is worth treating on its own merits. Most dandruff is chronic and relapsing, treatment settles a flare, and a maintenance routine keeps it settled — with itching easing within a week or two and flaking taking a few weeks.
