Stretch Marks
Be wary of anyone promising removal. Stretch marks are scars in the dermis; treatment can genuinely improve their texture and colour, and newer red or purple marks respond better than old white ones.
What people usually notice
- Streaks on the stomach, thighs, hips, arms or chest
- Marks that started red or purple and faded to white
- A texture change you can feel with a fingertip
- Marks that appeared during a growth spurt, pregnancy or weight change
What commonly contributes
- Rapid stretching of the skin faster than it can adapt
- Pregnancy
- Adolescent growth spurts
- Significant weight or muscle gain
This page describes what is common, not what is true of you. Only an examination can say which of these applies.
What a doctor may consider
Which of these suits you — and whether any of them is needed at all — is decided at the consultation, not from this page.
What the consultation settles
The consultation should tell you plainly how much improvement is realistic for the age and colour of your marks. Newer marks do better, and that window is worth knowing about.
