Dandruff & an Itchy Scalp
Not all flaking is dandruff, and treating the wrong one is why so many people cycle through shampoos without progress. A dry scalp, seborrhoeic dermatitis and psoriasis all flake, and they are managed differently.
What people usually notice
- Visible flakes on the shoulders or in the part line
- Itching that gets worse in the evening
- An oily scalp that still flakes
- Redness or irritation you can see at the roots
What commonly contributes
- Malassezia, a yeast that lives on most scalps and can overgrow
- Seborrhoeic dermatitis, which is common and recurring
- Product build-up or infrequent washing
- Genuinely dry scalp, which is a different problem and needs the opposite approach
This page describes what is common, not what is true of you. Only an examination can say which of these applies.
What a doctor may consider
Which of these suits you — and whether any of them is needed at all — is decided at the consultation, not from this page.
What the consultation settles
Persistent flaking with visible redness deserves a doctor's look rather than a fourth shampoo. Scalp inflammation left long enough can contribute to shedding.
